American International School of Lome

CURRICULUM

The curriculum at the American International School of Lome (AISL) is based on American standards and benchmarks. English is the language of instruction, and French is taught as a foreign language at all levels. Internal assessments are given throughout the school year and internal semester exams are given in grades 9-12. The school is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA).

The Lower School at the American International School of Lome consists of nursery school through grade 5. The lower school focuses on meeting the needs of the whole child by providing opportunities for personal and academic growth in a nurturing learning environment. Children learn new concepts and skills through their class work. Also, students are assigned projects, long-term assignments, and group work. As a school with small class sizes, AISL has a flexible and challenging curriculum in the lower school. Subjects included in the curriculum are Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, Art, Physical Education, Information Technology and French, the host country language.

The Upper School at AISL consists of students in grades 6 – 12. Grades 6-8 are considered as middle school, and grades 9 -12 comprise the high school. Students in the middle school are acquiring skills in preparation for high school. Emphasis is placed on the development of writing, listening, speaking, and reasoning skills. Courses in the middle school consist of Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, French, Physical Education, Information Technology, and Art. The high school program is university/college preparatory, offering a full range of courses that lead toward the attainment of an American high school diploma. To qualify for the American high school diploma, students must complete a total of 24 credits in grades 9-12. These credits must consist of the following English, Social Studies/History, Science (with labs), Mathematics, French, Physical Education, Information Technology, and Art, Physical Education. Some elective courses are offered on a rotational basis.
